Job Overview

In partnership with the UC Health academic healthcare system and Cincinnati Children s Hospital Medical Center, College of Medicine s faculty are transforming the world of medicine every day.

The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (UCCOM), Office of Graduate Education, enthusiastically announces this newly created position, Assistant Dean For Graduate Diversity And Education, with the goals of addressing the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) needs of its approximately 730 PhD and MS students. This position/person will address these needs by establishing an innovative program encompassing the roles and responsibilities found below. There is flexibility for this leadership position that will allow for novel approaches to achieve the 4 primary goals. Sufficient support staff will be in place to assist in realizing these goals.

Essential Functions

This position will address important DEI needs by including the following roles and
Responsibilities:

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Director

  • Collaborating and implementing a comprehensive strategic plan to improve DEI in UCCOM Graduate Programs
  • Planning and implementation of DEI recruitment events, outreach efforts to attract diverse & underrepresented minority (URM) graduate students, including working with partner institutions such as HBCU colleges and others serving disadvantaged students
  • Planning and implementing DEI education, resilience training, and mentor training for faculty, graduate students, program directors, and coordinators/staff
  • Serving as an advisor to student organizations, especially those that include URM students (e.g., SACNAS, the Black Biomedical Graduate Student Group)
  • Collaborating with other leaders to improve access to mental health services and other supports services needed to help UCCOM graduate students

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program Director

  • Reviewing applications from undergraduate students, coordinating URM/DA student recruitment and matchig students with research mentors
  • Overseeing onboarding, housing and transportation needs for students
  • Coordinating with other UC & Cincinnati Children s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) SURF programs, including group events

Co-Direct NIH R25 PREP Program to prepare disadvantaged & URM students for graduate school

  • Oversee execution of program, including applications, evaluation materials, meetings & reports by PREP Program manager
  • Training faculty mentors in DEI and mentoring
  • Participating in Interview of PREP fellow applicants
  • Meeting with trainees to assist with their professional development, including organizing weekly PREP skill-development workshops
  • Assisting with NIH Grant progress reports, writing & submission of competitive renewal of R25 grant
  • Maintaining and nurturing interactions with partner undergraduate institutions

Oversee & coordinate T32 training grant information collection by OGE staff

Faculty Appointment

In addition to the appointment as an Assistant Dean, the successful candidate will also be eligible for appointment to an Assistant Professor level faculty position based in the Department of Medical Education.

Minimum Requirements

The successful candidate will have an EdD or PhD with background and experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts and initiatives in academic medicine. Professional Degree:
EdD or PhD

The candidate must also demonstrate:

  • A collaborative and transparent leadership style, cultural awareness and agility, and have the ability to build trust and credibility
  • Knowledge of national issues surrounding diversity and inclusion in academia
  • Experience working with diverse faculty, student, and trainee populations
  • Experience conducting resilience and vitality trainings for faculty and students
  • Knowledge of research training programs and graduate students training
  • Experience in advancing and championing diversity and inclusion
  • Experience creating overarching strategic diversity and inclusion strategy and vision that includes organizational talent, recruitment, and retention of underrepresented faculty, staff, and students of all statuses
  • Experience in faculty and student development and training
  • Extensive experience in mentor training and mentoring URM and low SES students
  • Experience working with undergraduates and matching them with mentors
  • Experience organizing events and programming for faculty and students

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
