The major duties of the Physician (Sleep Lab Director) position will include:
SLEEP DIRECTOR The Sleep Center Director will be responsible for oversight and direction of all sleep lab staff and clinical operations. The Director will strategize and implement future clinical initiatives including utilization of Tele-Medicine and home sleep studies for patient care. Clinical duties will include interpreting sleep studies and providing direct patient care as a primary and/or supervising provider in Sleep Medicine Clinics. The Cincinnati VAMC has a 6 bed state-of-the-art hospital-based sleep center that supports diagnostic and therapeutic polysomnograms, maintenance of wakefulness testing, multiple sleep latency testing, and other sleep related studies. The program interacts with and is robustly supported by other subspecialties including ENT, Dentistry, Psychology, Neurology and Pulmonary Medicine. There is also a dedicated support staff including nurse practitioners, nurse case management, sleep technicians and respiratory therapists. The position includes participation as a faculty member in an ACGME-accredited sleep medicine fellowship under the auspices of the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. The selected physician is expected to participate in the training of fellows from Sleep and Pulmonary Medicine, residents from Internal Medicine, Psychiatry and Neurology, as well as medical students from the affiliated College of Medicine. Other duties relating to programmatic oversight will include ongoing review of program metrics, maximize resources and personnel to optimize care delivery, complete bi-annual performance reviews, provide committee service as chair or member, represent the program to facility leadership, and provide other administrative activities as needed. Opportunities for clinical sleep research are also available, especially for sleep disorders associated with post-traumatic stress disorder. The Cincinnati VAMC has a newly-built multipurpose research building, and is an active partner in the Center for Clinical and Translational Science and Training (CCTST) program with University of Cincinnati and Children's Hospital of Cincinnati. There may be additional opportunities to participate in specialty specific clinical and non-clinical activities depending upon background and academic interests. Candidates should have (1) completed an accredited sleep medicine fellowship, (2) be boarded / board eligible in Sleep Medicine, and (3) be qualified to obtain an academic appointment at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. SLEEP PHYSICIAN PATIENT CARE Direct patient care, supervision of trainees in clinics, writing of prescription medications, writing for consultative services, diet instruction, and other physician-driven or exclusive decisions. Provide evaluations and treatment recommendations, including placement of orders for sleep medicine patients. Apply national and VA guidelines to patient screening, surveillance and management of such diseases. Diagnose, treat, and manage patients with sleep disorders according to standard, usual, and acceptable methods and techniques. Work closely with other specialists and primary care physicians to ensure that patients receive continuous quality care. Provides consultation service related to sleep medicine to the medical staff. Participates in quality assurance programs and chart reviews. Specialty specific duties. SLEEP STUDIES Complete timely review of polysomnography and home sleep test recordings Review of video recordings, especially those of patients with suspected or confirmed parasomnias and seizures. Review of applicable and associated technician notes and comments. Review of the patient's pre-test sleep questionnaire, if one was completed. Review of the patient's pre-and post- test questionnaires. Generation of the report using the Cincinnati VA's templates. Interpretation of the findings of the review, using the latest American Academy of Sleep Medicine scoring and diagnostic criteria for inclusion on the report. Formulation of the treatment plan Initiating orders for sleep disorders related devices (e.g. APAP), procedures (in-lab PSG with CPAP due to CVD, other reasons), lab work (e.g. ferritin), and specialty consults (e.g. E-consult for Angela Morriss MD to evaluate the study's EEG for epileptiform activity). Coordinate report, results and DME supplies with sleep medicine team and prosthetics. Communicate with ordering providers and patients and other specialties not limited to ENT, dental, nutrition, psychiatry to ensure comprehensive multidisciplinary patient care. Prompt completion of the test report and the associated billing/workload encounter. Work Schedule:

United States Citizenship:

Degree of doctor of medicineor an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Licensure and Registration. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Experience:
Successful completion of an approved ACGME/AOA accredited residency-training program followed by certification in Sleep Medicine (ACGME/AOA accredited fellowship also required after 2012). Reference:

Per VA Directive and Handbook 5019 - a physical examination will be conducted based on the physical requirements of the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work. However, there will be some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items like papers, books, files, and repositioning of patients. Light lifting, under 15 pounds; light carrying, under 15 pounds; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (8 hours); standing (8 hours); ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; ability to distinguish basic colors; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted); mental and emotion stability; clear speech.
