The incumbent selected for this pipefitter position will perform work that involves installing, modifying and repairing new and existing high, medium or low pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam heating, steam generation, hydraulic system, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum and circulating pumps and radiators as established by the Maintenance and Operations Foreman or Chief of the Project Section, Assistant Chief Engineer or Chief Engineer for the Cincinnati Veterans Affairs Medical Center at a Journeyman Pipefitter level. This pipefitter will work under the direct supervision of the Maintenance and Operations Foreman in the Pipe Shop or Chief of the Project Section in the Minor Improvement Team (MIT). Work is assigned on a long-term, as well as on a day-to-day basis with assistance from the Pipefitter Work Leader or MIT Maintenance Mechanic Work Leader. Work assignments will come from the electronic work order system, assignments from supervisor or work leader, or emergent situations as reported by medical center staff. Incumbent will exercise judgment in prioritizing assignments to subordinates unless otherwise directed by supervisor. Specific problems are discussed with the work leader or supervisor for extensive and difficult assignments. However, normal, routine assignments are given with reference only to the desired results and time for accomplishment. Work is reviewed principally on the basis of results obtained. Incumbent has considerable latitude in processing work assignments and is normally free to use own judgment and initiative in completing assignments. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Installing, maintaining, repairing and testing of a complex sprinkler system. Install, maintain, repair and test pumping fixtures, water supply lines, drain lines, steam generating and using equipment, the steam distribution and condensate return system. Perform preventive maintenance and inspections on sewage lift stations, steam traps, constant temperature hot water converters, eyewash and shower mixing valves. Works from building plans, blueprints, and sketches to plan and lay out the routing, placement, pitch, elevation, pressure reduction, expansion and operation of various piping systems and equipment. Installs equipment by planning and completing the routing and placement of systems leading to the equipment, determining and placing the equipment at the proper levels and points in the systems and joining, sealing and testing systems and equipment for proper pressures, leak free joints, and operation. Installs, maintains and repairs internal water lines, internal and external soil pipe, oxygen, medical air, vacuum, nitrogen lines, external water mains, outdoor sprinkler systems and all related devices and equipment such as drain traps, faucets, lavatories, water closets, showers, tubs, grease traps, circulating pumps, fire control sprinkler systems, hydrotherapy units, urinals, surgical scrub sinks, x-ray developers, laundry machines, drinking fountains, air compressors, dietetic equipment, dental equipment and various valves, pumps, etc. Weld joints and fittings using gas or electric welding units as well as silver solder. Responsible for the total operation, repair, maintenance, and documentation of the reverse osmosis (R.O.) system in the medical center. Performing and documenting Joint Commission and NFPA required testing and maintenance. This shall also include monitoring work performed by contactors. A member of the snow removal team. Experience:
A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements:
Incumbent shall make installation and repairs from ladders, scaffolding, platforms and where parts of systems worked on are hard to reach places. The incumbent makes repairs and installations while stooping, kneeling, and working with hands over head, lifting, and using arm muscles tightening connections. There is a considerable amount of dexterity required in performing caulking, joining and fitting and repacking valves, installing unit heaters, repairing steam condensate and hot water pumps. The incumbent frequently handles, lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally the incumbent may lift and carry items that weight over 50 pounds.
