Nurse Practitioner (Emergency Department)

This Nurse Practitioner (NP) position located in the Emergency Department is responsible for interviewing, evaluating, assessing, diagnosing and treating patients primarily assigned to the Fast Track and Urgent Care sections of the Emergency Department for the management of medical and surgical conditions. This NP utilizes medical guidelines, appropriate internal medicine and surgical standards of care in collaboration with attending physicians in providing quality care to patients presenting with complex acute, critical and complex chronic health conditions. This Nurse Practitioner is a skilled health care provider who utilizes critical judgment in the performance of comprehensive health assessments, differential diagnosis, and the prescribing of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments in the direct management of patients presenting with complex acute, and complex chronic health conditions. Other duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Maintains safe management practices in the care of all Emergency Department patients. Shares knowledge with Emergency Room staff by developing and providing the education needed to implement evidence-based practice to improve patient outcomes. Serves as a resource to other members of the health care team, providing consultation and education. Demonstrates leadership through development and coordination of programs to improve quality of care and organizational processes. Develops and plans educational programs that improve emergency nursing practice and outcomes. Practices and promotes wellness and prevents illness and injury. Will support the Federal Government's response efforts to COVID-19. The Nurse Practitioner Emergency Department conducts a comprehensive assessment of patients' medical, physical and biopsychosocial status including:
- Obtains a relevant health and medical history - Performs a physical examination based on age and history - Updates evaluation of health status to determine need for further health care - Formulates appropriate medical diagnoses based on data obtained - Orders appropriate diagnostic procedures and laboratory tests - Identifies and prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological agents - Identifies needs of the individual and family as a result of the evaluation of collected data - Provides relevant patient/family education - Makes appropriate referrals to other health professionals and community agencies - Consults with collaborating health care professionals when doubt exists as to the diagnosis, when expected improvement is not soon apparent and when specialized therapeutic or diagnostic techniques are indicated. - Determines the effectiveness of the plan of care through documentation of client care outcomes - Reassesses and modifies the plan as necessary to achieve medical and health goals The Nurse Practitioner is under the supervision of the ACOS/Primary Care or his/her designee and is accountable to the Chief Nurse, Primary Care. United States Citizenship. Education - Possess a master's degree from a program approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:
The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Licensure - Current, full, active, and unrestricted license, or otherwise recognized, as an Adult Nurse Practitioner in any State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree. Reference:

Per VA Directive and Handbook 5019 - a physical examination will be conducted based on the physical requirements of the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. Regarding this specific RN position the population of male and female veterans served ranges from adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. The VA Medical center is a major interdisciplinary teaching facility, serving medical, surgical, and neurological inpatients and outpatients. There is a large outpatient psychiatric population, with admissions for medical co-morbidities. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continues walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. BLS/ACLS REQUIREMENTS UPON SELECTION:
Per VHA Directive 1177, current certification in BLS issued from the American Heart Association or Military Training Network is required for all staff providing direct patient care, and police. Additionally, current ACLS is required for patient care staff that work in specified or high-risk areas. If you are selected for a position which requires BLS/ACLS certification, you will be required to have proof of certification (issued from the American Heart Association or Military Training Network) prior to being boarded for an appointment with the VA.
