Medical Support Assistant

Assignments at this full performance level include, but are not limited to:
Scheduling, canceling, rescheduling patient's appointments and/or consults Entering no-shows information Monitoring the electronic wait list Preparing for clinic visits, monitoring both inpatient and outpatient appointments for areas of responsibility Verifying and updating demographics and insurance information processing all emergent and non-emergent transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals performing basic eligibility, co-payments, and preauthorization requirements for specific coverage. Makes necessary arrangements for emergency transfers to and from VA and private hospitals and prepares necessary paperwork in a prompt manner for cost containment. Incumbent also arranges transportation and travel arrangements to appointments while inpatients. Receives patients and visits in person and telephonically. Records and relays messages and/or redirects calls as necessary. Refer urgent messages and patient results for immediate action. Obtains identifying information and determines the nature of the visit/call. Work Schedule:

MSAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.
Experience:
Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; OR Education:
One year above high school OR Experience/Education Combination:
Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. Creditable Education:
Two years above high school (60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours) (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). AND GRADE REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge of Current MSA Practices:
To be creditable, the experience must have demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) associated with current MSA responsibilities. Experience satisfying this requirement may be paid/non-paid employment as a MSA. Quality of Experience. Qualifying experience must be at a level comparable to MSA experience at the next lower grade level. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher level duties must consist of significant scope, administrative independence, complexity (difficulty) and range of variety as described in this standard at the specified grade level and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. Part-Time Experience. Part-time experience as a MSA is creditable according to its relationship to the full-time workweek. For example, a MSA employed 20 hours a week, or on a 1/2-time basis, would receive 1 full-time workweek of credit for each 2 weeks of service. Preferred

Experience working with an automated (computerized) patient record system, scheduling appointments in clinic setting, typing, and or copying letters, memos and reports using medical terminology. Grade Determinations:

Experience. In addition to the basic requirements, this position requires one (1) year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-04) (Your experience must be detailed in your r sum to receive full credit.) OR Creditable Education:
Four years above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) Assignment. This is the full performance level for MSAs. At this level, the MSA performs a full range of duties:
The MSA is responsible for scheduling appointments, including interpreting and verifying provider orders in accordance with VHA national scheduling guidelines. Assignments at this level include, but are not limited to:
scheduling, canceling, re-scheduling patient's appointments and/or consults; entering no-show information; monitoring the electronic wait list; preparing for clinic visits; monitoring both inpatient and outpatient appointments for areas of responsibility; ensuring encounter forms are completed in order to obtain appropriate workload credit; verifying and updating demographics and insurance information; processing all emergency and non-emergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals; performing basic eligibility, co-pays and preauthorization requirements for specific coverage (i.e., TRICARE, sharing agreements, etc.). In addition to the qualifications above, candidates must demonstrate all of the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Ability to operate computerized programs and databases in order to enter, modify and retrieve sensitive information/data into or from electronic medical records, scheduling systems and/or reports. 2. Knowledge of basic medical terminology. 3. Ability to make appointments in a clinical setting. 4. Ability to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties, including setting priorities and coordinating work. 5. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. 6. Ability to identify customer's concerns, perform the tasks required to resolve the issue accurately and timely, and follow-up as necessary to ensure a satisfactory resolution. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
