The Staff RN in the Specialty Care/ Med-Surg Clinics provides outpatient clinic services for patients. He/she assumes accountability and responsibility for his/her nursing practice and decisions affecting patient care. Primary functions include patient assessment for specified clinic appointments, patient education and coordination of care within the clinic setting to facilitate the delivery of care in a timely and efficient manner. Patient safety is also a priority in the clinic setting with attention to implementation and maintenance of patient safety standards. This RN considers all characteristics of the individual, including sex and sex role identification, age and life stage, state of health, race and culture, socio-economic status, values and previous experience with similar events, in order to assist each patient to identify and meet basic health needs and improve his/her health status to the individual's maximum potential. This RN must demonstrate the flexibility to work in a constantly changing, dynamic and diverse environment requiring excellent interpersonal, clinical, and critical thinking skills. Other duties include but are not limited to the following:
Documents observations, assessments, changes in patient's condition, medication delivery and transportation of patients to tests/procedures Provides a full range of nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems. Collaborates with health team members to facilitate positive patient care outcomes Administers medications and assist with procedures per established policies, protocols and guidelines. Must possess the ability to establish effective communication with patients, families, visitors, and members of the interdisciplinary team. Participates as a unit member to enhance the work environment and foster healthy professional relationships. Communicates timely and effectively with all members of the patient care team, as well as relate courteously and appropriately to all internal and external customers. Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care. Consistently demonstrates sound clinical judgment and the ability to effectively provide and/or direct the care provided by team members for patients on an assigned clinic and modifies and updates the plans of care/treatment plans for patients on an assigned clinic. Participates in studying, identifying, evaluating and implementing creative process and system improvements that facilitate the Mission of the Medical Center at the program or service level and which can be documented through demonstrated outcomes. Demonstrates understanding of patient rights, policies relating to patient rights and understanding of ethics for the Federal employee. Acts as a patient advocate, guides, directs or supports co workers regarding ethical issues and makes appropriate referrals when issues are suspected or identified; i.e. knowledgeable regarding the chain-of command and ensures referrals are made to the Medical Ethics Committee when appropriate Guides and ensures that other health team members follow established safety protocols that have been designed to reduce/eliminate the risk of injury. Demonstrates leadership by developing, revising, evaluating and communicating standards of nursing practice related to his/her area of nursing practice. Participates in research or facilitates special projects designed to evaluate and improve patient care and health care delivery and shares information from research findings or special projects through presentation. Assists nursing personnel with assessment, implementation and evaluation of new approaches, procedures and standards of patient care, based on reliable nursing research and/or literature review. Demonstrates and maintains full competency in the use, pre-cleaning and/or reprocessing of reusable medical equipment. This staff nurse is accountable to the Nurse Manager, Outpatient Specialty Clinics. Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:
The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Must hold a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Per VA Directive and Handbook 5019 - a physical examination will be conducted based on the physical requirements of the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. The population of male and female veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. The VA Medical Center is a major interdisciplinary teaching facility, serving medical, surgical, and neurological inpatients and outpatients. There is a large outpatient psychiatric population, with admissions for medical co-morbidities. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, ability to distinguish basic color and shades of colors; clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued standing, walking, and kneeling; stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, pushing; the use of fingers on both hands; ability to reach above shoulders; repeated bending; and ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Transferring patients and objects may be required. May require occasional heaving lifting (45 lbs and over); moderate carrying (15-44 lbs); The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. BLS/ACLS REQUIREMENTS UPON SELECTION:
Per VHA Directive 1177, current certification in BLS issued from the American Heart Association or Military Training Network is required for all staff providing direct patient care, and police. Additionally, current ACLS is required for patient care staff that work in specified or high-risk areas. If you are selected for a position which requires BLS/ACLS certification, you will be required to have proof of certification (issued from the American Heart Association or Military Training Network) prior to being boarded for an appointment with the VA. (Failure to provide such certification can result in delays in the hiring process).

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
