6 Full-time 3 hours ago Full Job Description Job Description The Cancer Quality Assurance Specialist is responsible to lead the Quality Assurance (QA) processes and monitoring for the UC Health Cancer Registry in accordance with the Commission on Cancer Quality of Cancer Registry Data Standards.
The Cancer Quality Assurance Specialist ensures the highest quality of data integrity and reporting processes by providing training and direction to the Tumor Registrars to reach proficiency and excellence in the collection of clinical data for all cases of malignant disease, diagnosed and treated within UC Health.
The Cancer Registry Quality Assurance Specialist participates in the overall planning, policy, and direction setting of the collection, data maintenance, quality control, and data requests related to registry data.
Responsibilities Job Function:
Quality Assurance/Education/Coaching/Competency-40% Develop and maintain a Quality Control/Quality Assurance system for the UC Health Cancer Registry in accordance with the Commission on Cancer Quality of Cancer Registry Data Standards Serves as Quality Assurance (QA) lead by providing professional and technical information on cancer registration methods and registry data integrity both internally and externally with hospitals and other agencies.
Responsible for development and maintenance of the Cancer Registry Policy and Procedure Manual in accordance with CoC standards for all cancer registry data.
Assists in development and maintenance of quality control case findings, abstraction, coding, follow-up, and data processing procedures.
Participates in panel reviews for new staff and provides feedback for the performance review process as it relates to training and QA Identify and facilitate education and training needs of the department based on results of quality reviews.
Monitor data abstracting accuracy, productivity, and Interrater reliability (IRR) rates of the Cancer Registrars Responsible for collaboration with Cancer Registry Supervisor to establish and lead orientations, ongoing trainings, quality auditing processes and onboarding plans for new and existing employees to include accuracy and productivity standards.
Completes and oversees the abstraction, classifying, and coding of clinical data on cancer patients for the Tumor Registry new hires.
Serves as a QA subject matter expert and/or preceptor for newly onboarded employees In collaboration with colleagues, institutes processes to ensure data quality, timeliness and completeness for regulatory reporting, and internal data reporting.
Job Function:
Abstraction - 30% Assures that complete and accurate abstracts and follow-up are maintained on all eligible cancer patients diagnosed and/or treated at UC Health according to all applicable standard setters including NAACCR, NPCR, the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, the American Joint Commission on Cancer (AJCC) and other guidelines.
Assists with monthly and annual data submission process to ensure compliance with the state of Ohio- OCISS, and American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer call for data.
Identifies, organizes, maintains, analyzes, abstracts, and follows up the medical record in complex multimedia systems of all patient cases that have been diagnosed as having cancer or certain benign tumors seen at UC Health within the guidelines of the applicable state requirements for Ohio and the American College of Surgeons (ACoS).
Promotes continuing care of cancer patients through follow-up system.
Coordinates information.
Communicates with physicians and patients regarding continued care.
Communicates with other registries, medical facilities, and health professionals for exchange of pertinent information.
Performs expert data entry utilizing specialized software.
Responsible for complete and accurate entry of data for cases of all levels and primary sites, utilizing established quality control methods.
Responsible for data retrieval, data comprehension and data integration in the full spectrum of all disease sites of cancer (Diagnosis; Clinical and Pathological Staging; SEER Summary Staging and First Course Treatment Coding and classification).
Utilizes data manuals of defined outcome measurements, terms, and calculations and monitors for changes in data requirements.
Abstracts patient data into the specialty registry databases, audits data for completeness and accuracy and generates data files for review and submission.
Reports progress of data abstraction efforts routinely to Manager and assists to ensure reporting deadlines are met.
Assists in identification and collection of information for annual and ad-hoc reports.
Assists in design of tables, charts and graphs depicting cancer statistics Possesses advanced critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving skills.
Job Function:
Performance Improvement/Quality & Safety - 15% Under the supervision of the Manager of Cancer Registry, responsible for the following:
organize, participate, and facilitate Cancer Registry data for tumor board meetings and Cancer Committees Prepares routine and special reports which summarize the quality assurance efforts for each new abstractor Responsible for assisting in the updating and maintaining all cancer registry data changes and disseminating changes to registrars.
Analyze and evaluates data and clinical information to identify performance and quality issues and trends.
Job Function:
Informatics, Information Security, and Technology- 5% Understands informatics concepts and can identify data gathering techniques within the EMR to improve and enhance registry data capture Assists in assembly and dissemination of data compiled in computer registry.
Assists leaders to deploy documentation optimization initiatives related to registry requirements and assists in assessing and evaluating documentation workflows for physician and nursing teams as they relate to registry.
Competent using Epic and computer related registry applications and associated PHI Intermediate to advanced computer skills to be proficient in Microsoft Office applications Establishes and facilitates data integrity auditing process and Inter-rater reliability with TR Supervisor Job Function:
Professional Development-5% Stays current with knowledge of industry trends to understand key clinical and healthcare registry related issues i.

Minimum:
Complete 20 hours of Continuing Education hours bi-annually as required by the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA) Participates in educational activities of local, state, and national tumor registrar associations.
Attends lectures, symposia, and training programs as directed or available.
Facilitates understanding of tumor registry documentation requirements between clinical teams and TR Supervisor/ TR staff, which may include face-to-face communications, phone communications, and to include educational presentations as needed.
Job Function:
Other duties as assigned - 5% Qualifications Associates Degree required.
RHIA preferred.
College level Anatomy and Physiology Medical Terminology required.
Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) required; with RHIT or RHIA preferred.
Minimum 5 years of hospital registry experience as a Certified Tumor Registrar.
Prefer depth of experience in cancer data quality assurance review.
Has extensive job knowledge in applying all current and historical coding regulations, policies, and procedures Technical qualifications including knowledge of the disease process, diagnostic methods and procedures, composition of the health record, data interpretation, and statistical and analytical skills.
Responsible for data retrieval, data comprehension and data integration in the full spectrum of all disease sites of cancer (Diagnosis; Clinical and Pathological Staging; SEER Summary Staging and First Course Treatment Coding and classification).
Proficient in the use of the following standardized coding and classification sets:
International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O), Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) Multiple Primary and Histology rule set, Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Neoplasm Coding Manual and Database, Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) RX - Interactive Drug Database, American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) TNM direct staging of all cancer sites, Standards for Oncology Registry Entry (STORE).
Excellent understanding of coding and abstraction of data, quality control methods, presentation skills and training, data analysis and report writing Ability to work independently in a time-oriented environment; Maintain high levels of personal accountability in deadline management; Requires ability to work autonomously, within a complex and quickly changing environment.
Ability to effectively communicate with Tumor Registrars, attending physicians and clinical teams regarding documentation requirements.

Ability to interpret medical data, pharmacology, clinical procedures, terminology as documented in the care of the cancer population.
Aptitude for detail-oriented work with a high level of accuracy.
Strong computer skills with ability to easily navigate Epic Electronic Medical Record and registry vendor tools and platforms, to accurately enter/retrieve data, generate reports, and provide routine updates using Microsoft Office tools.
Ability to utilize appropriate software to obtain data in usable format and develop appropriate material to report findings.
This individual must maintain professional confidentiality as privileged information will be retrieved, studied, and recorded.
This individual is responsible for knowledge of specific data requirements as defined by the association that defines registry requirements.
As the registry subject matter expert, this individual will remain current on all metrics and abstraction/documentation changes.
